  1. Silent work day: Hemingway’s Soldier’s Home

    1. This is a war story that includes no physical violence because Hemingway focuses on the war’s psychological effects on the protagonist. A truce ended the wholesale butchery of youth fighting during World War I, but the painful memory of it has made Krebs a prisoner of war. Although the story’s setting is a peaceful small town in Oklahoma, Hemingway evokes the horrors that Krebs endured and brought back home with him. In a sense, the real setting of this story is Belleau Wood as well as the sites of the other bloody battles Krebs experienced…
